Feeling Lost in Life? How to Find Clarity, Purpose and Your Next Direction
Lost in Translation #11: SITREP

When the structure you relied on changes, how do you work out where you are heading next? A personal SITREP can help you understand where you are, what matters now and what comes next.
In the military, a SITREP is a situation report.
It is a clear, structured and honest account of where you are right now. What is happening. What resources you have available. What challenges exist. What the ground looks like from your current position.
It is one of the most useful tools in operational planning because good decisions depend on having an accurate understanding of reality.
Yet most people never give themselves one.
We plan careers, projects, holidays and finances. We spend years moving from one objective to the next, often without stopping to ask one of the most important questions:
Am I still heading towards something that matters to me?
That is where a personal SITREP becomes valuable.
It is not about judging where you are.
It is about understanding where you are.
Why Feeling Lost in Life Often Happens During Transitions
Feeling lost in life is often misunderstood.
People assume it means they have failed, lost motivation or made the wrong decisions.
Often, it means something much simpler.
The old direction no longer fits, but the new one has not fully appeared yet.
This can happen after leaving a long career, changing roles, starting a business, approaching retirement, experiencing redundancy or simply reaching a point where the version of success you once chased no longer feels meaningful.
The practical questions usually come first.
What do I do next?
What job should I pursue?
What skills do I need?
How do I explain my experience?
Those questions matter. But underneath them are deeper questions that often determine whether the next chapter actually feels right.
Who am I now?
What matters to me?
What kind of life am I trying to build?
A personal SITREP helps answer those questions.
What Is a SITREP and How Can It Help You Find Direction?
A SITREP means Situation Report.
In the military, it provides a snapshot of the current situation so decisions can be made from a position of understanding rather than assumption.
The same principle applies to life.
Before deciding what comes next, it helps to understand where you currently stand.
What strengths do you already have?
What experiences have shaped you?
What parts of your life give you energy?
What no longer feels aligned?
Without that honest assessment, it is easy to make decisions based on what you think you should do rather than what is actually right for you.
A SITREP creates a moment to pause and take stock.
Not to stop moving.
To make sure you are moving in the right direction.
My Own SITREP Right Now
If I gave myself an honest SITREP today, it would look something like this:
“I am halfway through and changing direction. The questions that matter most now are not what do I want to achieve, but what do I want to feel? How am I adding value? What good can I do for something wider than myself?”
When I was younger, my SITREP would have looked very different.
Like many people, I measured progress through external markers.
Career progression.
Status.
Possessions.
The things society often tells us represent success.
There is nothing wrong with ambition. Achievement matters. Doing things well matters.
But over time, my understanding of success has changed.
Now the terrain looks different.
Stewardship.
Legacy.
The impact of a small business on the people it supports.
How I look after my team.
What we leave behind.
The search for happiness has become something quieter.
A search for peace.
Calm.
Fulfilment.
Those are not always the same destination.
The personal work continues. It always will.
But the difference now is being willing to name what is really happening rather than quietly carrying it.
That is what a SITREP does.
It makes the invisible visible.
The Questions Most People Never Ask Themselves
The people I work with are rarely lacking intelligence, ambition or capability.
They are usually people who have spent years doing, achieving and delivering, but have rarely created the space to ask themselves what they are actually building.
The question I often come back to is:
“What does good look like for you? Not the job. Not the salary. Not the title. The life. What does a good day feel like at the other end of this?”
It is a simple question, but it can change the entire conversation.
Many people spend years following a definition of success created by someone else.
A career ladder.
A promotion structure.
A social expectation.
A version of achievement that looks impressive from the outside.
But a meaningful life is not built by following someone else’s map.
It is built by understanding your own.
How to Create Your Own Personal SITREP
A personal SITREP does not need to be complicated.
It does not need a perfect template.
It needs honesty.
Take some time and write your answers without editing yourself.
Where am I right now?
Not where you think you should be.
Not where you expected to be.
Where are you actually?
What feels good?
What feels difficult?
What needs attention?
What do I already have?
Not possessions.
Your real resources.
Your experience.
Your relationships.
Your values.
Your strengths.
The things that have carried you this far.
What does good look like from here?
Forget what success is supposed to look like.
What would a good day feel like?
What kind of person do you want to become?
What do you want your life to be built around?
What is one step I can take this week?
You do not need the entire route mapped.
You need the next heading.
Small actions create movement.
Movement creates clarity.
Finding Purpose Is Not About Starting Again
One of the biggest misconceptions about transition is that you have to reinvent yourself completely.
Usually, you do not.
You carry more forward than you realise.
Your experiences.
Your values.
Your skills.
Your lessons.
Your relationships.
The challenge is recognising what still belongs in your next chapter and what needs to be left behind.
A SITREP is not about becoming someone different.
It is about understanding yourself better.
The SITREP Is Not About Having All The Answers
A SITREP does not magically solve every decision.
It does something more important.
It gives you an honest starting point.
You cannot navigate effectively from a false position.
You cannot choose your next direction if you refuse to acknowledge where you currently are.
“The SITREP does not need to be long. It needs to be honest. And it needs to be yours, not a version of someone else’s idea of where you should be by now.”
That is where clarity begins.
Not by having every answer.
By being willing to ask better questions.
Clarity. Courage. Connection.
Clarity. The honest SITREP shows you the real terrain. It gives you a starting point based on reality rather than assumptions.
Courage. Telling yourself the truth takes bravery, especially when your current situation does not match the plan you created years ago.
Connection. You do not have to work it all out alone. Sometimes the most valuable thing someone can offer is not advice, but the space to think clearly.
That is what coaching creates.
A place to slow down.
A place to ask better questions.
A place to understand what comes next.

FAQs: Feeling Lost in Life, Finding Purpose and Creating Your Personal SITREP

Feeling lost does not always mean something is wrong. It can happen when your current life no longer matches your values, priorities or the future you want to create.
How do I find purpose when I feel stuck?
Start by understanding where you are now. Reflect on your strengths, values, experiences and what gives you energy. Purpose is often discovered through exploration rather than one sudden answer.

A SITREP means Situation Report. It is a structured reflection on your current situation, including where you are, what resources you have and what direction you want to move towards.
