Life Coaching for Veterans: Finding Your Next Mission After Military Service
Lost in Translation #9: Make Fast

The lines are secured. The new mission begins.
In the Royal Navy, make fast means to secure the lines to a berth. It means you have arrived. The crossing is complete. The movement, uncertainty and open water have, for now, settled.
Today, ACSIS Life Coaching is made fast.
And the most exciting mission of my career begins.
But this is not a sudden change of direction. It is the result of everything that came before. Twenty-eight years of service. Every deployment. Every posting. Every challenge. Every lesson.
All of it was preparation.
The Journey That Led to ACSIS Life Coaching
I have been coaching for most of my adult life without calling it coaching.
It started as a scuba diving instructor on the Red Sea, helping people overcome fears and achieve things they did not believe were possible. It continued as a triathlon coach, supporting people towards finish lines they once thought were beyond them. It showed up throughout my military career as a mentor, divisional officer and senior leader.
The part of leadership I always valued most was the human part.
Helping people find their footing. Asking questions that helped people see situations differently. Creating the space where someone could work out what came next.
But it was the Windsor Leadership programme that made it explicit.
Sitting in that room, exploring what leadership meant at its deepest level, I understood something with complete clarity.
Sitting in that room, working through what leadership meant at its deepest level, I understood with sudden and complete clarity that this was not just something I was good at. This was my calling. My passion. The thing I wanted to do every day for the rest of my working life.
This was not just something I was good at.
This was the work I wanted to do every day.
This was my calling.
ACSIS is not a pivot. It is an arrival.
The experiences, relationships and lessons from nearly three decades of service were not separate chapters. They were all preparing me for this one.

Finding Purpose After Military Service
Leaving the military is rarely just about changing jobs.
For many veterans, it involves rebuilding identity, purpose and direction after years of having a clear role, routine and mission. Military service provides structure. You know where you fit, what is expected of you and what success looks like.
Then one day, nobody sends your orders.
The people I work with come in all forms. Veterans leaving service who feel funnelled by one-size-fits-all transition programmes and cannot see beyond the obvious options. Women in mid-career who know something needs to change but cannot name what. Professionals who have reached a level of success that no longer feels like success and do not know what to do with that. People who are not lost, just not quite found yet.
The question changes.
What comes next?
For some people, that question is exciting. For others, it feels overwhelming.
The challenge is not that veterans lack skills. In many cases, they have spent years developing leadership, problem-solving and decision-making abilities in some of the most demanding environments.
The challenge is translating those experiences into a future that feels meaningful.
That is where life coaching for veterans can help.
Coaching is not about telling someone what their next step should be. It is about creating the space to understand who they are now, what matters to them and what kind of future they want to build.
What Does Good Look Like For You?
One of the most important questions I ask clients is:
What does good look like for you?
Not what society says success should look like.
Not what your family expected.
Not what your career progression chart suggested.
For you.
For a long time, I believed certain things were not available to me. I did not have the traditional background I thought successful people had. I assumed there were certain doors that were not meant to open.
That story took time to challenge.
What replaced it was something much simpler.
What brings me joy?
How do I want to spend my days?
How do I help people?
How do I stay connected to nature, curiosity and the things that make life meaningful?
Those questions became better navigation tools than any career ladder.
That is what ACSIS helps people discover.
Not someone else’s definition of success.
Their own.
Building Your Next Chapter With Clarity, Courage and Connection
A new beginning requires three things.
Clarity
You need to know what you are sailing towards.
The mission does not have to be perfect, but it needs to be clear enough to guide your decisions when things become uncertain.
Clarity is understanding what matters, what you want to protect and what direction feels right for you.
Courage
The first step is usually the hardest.
Taking a new path involves uncertainty. There will be risks. There will be mistakes.
But mistakes are not evidence that you have failed.
They are part of learning.
Every challenge, every setback and every wrong turn gives you information that helps you navigate better.
Connection
The most meaningful change rarely happens alone.
Connection starts with yourself. Understanding who you are now, not only who you were.
Then it extends to the people around you. The people who support you, challenge you and help you see possibilities you may not have considered.
Finally, it connects to something bigger: a purpose, a mission or a contribution that matters.
That is where meaningful work happens.

Life Coaching for Veterans: FAQs About Finding Your Next Mission
What does life coaching for veterans help with?
Life coaching for veterans helps people reflect on their experiences, recognise their strengths and build direction after service. It can support conversations around identity, purpose, career choices and creating a meaningful next chapter.
Why can leaving the military feel difficult?
Leaving the military is often more than a career change. It can involve adjusting to a different identity, routine and way of making decisions after years of operating within a clear structure.
How do I find purpose after military service?
Finding purpose after military service starts with understanding what matters to you now. Your next chapter does not have to replicate your previous one. It can be built around your values, strengths and the life you want to create.
Is coaching the same as therapy?
No. Therapy and coaching have different purposes. Therapy often focuses on processing experiences, emotions and the past, while coaching focuses on reflection, decisions, goals and moving forward.
Can coaching help if I feel successful but unfulfilled?
Yes. Many people reach a point where external achievements no longer feel meaningful. Coaching can help you explore what success means personally and identify what changes could create a more fulfilling future.
