Mission 6: Define Your Mission – Finding Your Purpose


Welcome to Mission 6 of the Mental Fitness Battlebox series. In previous missions, we explored how momentum, nutrition, rest, connection, and mindset build your resilience. Today, we look at the compass that makes all those tools meaningful: purpose.


Purpose gives direction to your decisions, energy to your efforts, and meaning to your challenges. It’s not about doing more, it’s about finding out how you can live with purpose.


Why Purpose Matters


Purpose isn't a luxury. It’s fundamental to mental and physical health. A 2021 study in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine found that people with a strong sense of purpose were significantly more resilient to stress and less likely to suffer cardiovascular issues.

Sam’s Journey to Purpose


For Sam Kinsey-Briggs, the path to finding her purpose has been shaped by a life rich with diverse experiences. Starting as a scuba diving instructor, Sam discovered her love for teaching and inspiring others early on.


This passion carried her through a distinguished career in the Army and Navy, where she took on leadership roles that required guiding and motivating teams in high-pressure environments.


Later, as a triathlon coach, Sam found joy in helping others achieve personal milestones and push beyond their limits. As a Scrum and Agile coach, she focused on helping teams and organisations navigate change and realise their potential.


"What I’ve realised is that my purpose has always been rooted in helping others find theirs. Whether it’s teaching someone to dive, mentoring a team, or coaching someone to finish their first triathlon, I thrive on helping people discover their passions and live the life they want, not the life society says they should."

Sam is passionate about breaking free from societal norms and pressures. Many of us feel obligated to follow a set script: getting a particular job, marrying, having children, or pursuing material success. While these paths are fulfilling for some, Sam believes life can mean something entirely different for others, and that’s okay.


"Purpose isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. It’s deeply personal. My mission is to help others uncover their unique purpose and empower them to live authentically, on their terms."


How to Discover Your Purpose


Finding purpose is not a single epiphany. It’s a quiet uncovering.


Here's how to begin:


Reflect on Your Passions

What lights you up? When do you feel most alive? Follow the moments that energise you.


Identify Core Values

Write down the 3–5 values that matter most to you. Are your daily choices honouring them?


Name Your Strengths

What comes naturally to you? Where do people turn to you for support or inspiration?


Release Expectations

Ask yourself: if I let go of what others expect, what life would I choose?


Set a Personal Mission

Craft a short statement that captures what matters to you and how you want to live. Revisit it often.


Purpose and the Resilience Agenda
